We are a husband and wife team, from Lincoln in the UK We first came to Sri Lanka in September 2009 and was instantly charmed by the people, their culture and the fantastic natural landscape. It felt like “coming home”.
We decided to build a holiday home for us and our extended family, began our search for land in 2010, completed our purchase and met an architect in 2011 and our sketch plan ideas became a reality and the build of The Retreat completed in 2012.
We have been in business in the holiday rental sector since November 2013. Formerly, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, we rebranded as The Phoenix Retreat in 2020, after the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 forced us to close our doors and consider what the future might hold.
We were one of the first privately owned villas to obtain accreditation, with merit, from the Sri Lanka Tourist Board, a requirement to reopen, after the pandemic.
WHO ARE WE?
The Team
Our onsite housekeeping team, husband and wife, Channa and Dinusha, are available to guests between the hours of 7am and 9pm. The pool is cleaned daily and all bed linen and towels are refreshed during your stay. They will cook and clean up after meals for you on request. A service charge is not included in villa price, so a cash payment is suggested at the end of your stay. As a guide, for a party of 6, a “tip” of 5,000 rupees per day for a meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) is recommended.
The staff understand your need for privacy and are based in separate on site living accommodation, where Channa sleeps overnight to give our guests extra reassurance and provides 24 hour security.
Our dedicated team of drivers, Channa’s brothers Upul, Sanje, and father Raj, all English speaking (indeed bilingual), will provide a tourist friendly tuk tuk service for short journeys or a fully air-conditioned mini bus for travel further afield.
As our team are from Hikkaduwa, they have an intimate knowledge of the surrounding area and will take you to good surfing spots and breathtaking beauty spots off the beaten track. They operate a family owned business specialising in tours of all the well known Sri Lankan sites, including the cultural triangle, national parks, the elephant orphanage, turtle hatcheries, city visits and will provide these services at preferential, consistent and very economical rates.
Please note, if you decide to use your own driver, we do not provide overnight accommodation to drivers or tour guides
